Spring holds a special energetic place in the world of Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and European Naturopathic teachings.
As the energy in the earth rises, so too does the energy in our bodies.
In the Yogic text the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna reveals himself with various attributes: “I am the Soul in the body, the Mind in the senses, the Eagle among birds, the Lion among animals. Among all the trees I am the sacred Bodhi tree, and of the seasons, I am Spring”.
In TCM spring is correlated to the wood element and as the weather warms the wood element begins to expand, just as flowers and plants explode back into life.
The liver organ system is predominant in the spring. It moves energy up and outward freely, much like the branches of a tree, hence the relationship to wood.
This is a great time of year to start new projects, clean house, and remove clutter and consider a gentle detox.
Adding more leafy greens to your diet, maybe starting the day with some warm lemon water, incorporating sour-flavoured foods into your diet, like grapefruit and kiwi, spices like ginger and fennel and fermented foods like sauerkraut.
These stimulate the digestive system and help eliminate any lingering winter sluggishness.
In our yoga classes we are adding more twists to our routines to stimulate the digestive organs and more pranayama to clear our energetic bodies.
Moving into the summer months feeling lighter and more energised.
