DAVID Mathews has been awarded Tamborine Mountain Lions Club lion of the year.
The award recognised David’s ten years of outstanding service to the Lions Club including his support of Mountain Mates.
During this time, he has worked in the catering van, the market parking and many working bees, helping to clean up people’s yards or Lions Park.
“It was a big surprise. There were a lot of people who deserved the accolade, and I was honoured to be presented with it,” he said.
“It was unexpected, so a good feeling to be honoured by my Lions club friends.”
Mountain Mates facilitator Janis Bailey said David was well-deserving of the award.
“He’s a friendly, engaging person to have around, he throws himself into events, and is always putting up his hand to do something,” she said.
“He just radiates positivity and enthusiasm, and our young Mates value his accepting nature, and the way he jokes and interacts with them. That gorgeous smile!”
David joined the Tamborine Mountain Lions Club in 2011 and never misses an opportunity to help out and support the community.
“I love the community spirit and keeping the values alive is strong here,” he expressed.
“We go on adventures and have fun times raising money for the community and wherever other Lions groups need it.
“It gives you a good feeling to be able to help out.”
He’s now busy preparing for the Mountain Mates Gala Community Bush Dance on August 30, rustling up donations for prizes and organising the food and logistics.
David encouraged others to think about joining.
“We are always after people to join. We have an ageing club and it’s becoming harder to get people to help out,” he said.
