IT was a great day to be a Bushrats supporter when the Hostplus Cup was held on their home ground at Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds. The weather turned it on as the crowd started to pour into the Tamborine Mountain Showgrounds to watch the first of two great games of rugby league.
Bushrats President Alick Kilsby said he has been working towards securing this standard of football to the Scenic Rim for three years.
“It was only after the Christmas storms that we managed to get this match here,” he said.
“I was asked what we wanted and I pushed for this match – it is an important event for the Scenic Rim.”
Bushrats beat Bears
The Bushrats Senior Men’s team got off to a cracking start, getting first blood in their game against the Burleigh Bears.
The Bears fought back, bringing the match to within two points but unable to get over the home favourites by full time.
Try scorers were Ben Coles, Edward Brimelow and Joshua Naughton with a double.
Trent Campbell successfully converted all tries and a penalty kick.
Magpies steal Cup
One level below the NRL, the Hostplus Cup was a spectacle.
Players from Burleigh Bears and Souths Logan Magpies looked every bit the professionals they are with each man vying for a contract in the National Competition.
Souths Logan were behind at half time 10-12 but came back strongly in the second half with a shock upset to take the win 32-18.
Ex-Broncos player Tristan Sailor son of dual code international player Wendell Sailor, played fullback for the Magpies, and put on a great show for the Tamborine Mountain locals.
