Mitre 10 is now solar powered and prepared for storm season with the additional of solar panels and batteries.
Store Manager Mark Stanley was pleased with the recent installation of a 30kW solar and 38.4kWh battery storage system.
“It is now operational and powering the local hardware store, day and night,” said Mark.
“We’re really pleased to have taken this step.
“Not only is it a smart economic investment but is also offers significant environmental benefit by capturing sunlight on our roof to almost entirely reduce our electricity demand.
“Even more importantly, we hope this helps build community resilience against future dramatic weather events.”
The system has grid failure protection to allow Mitre 10 to operate during blackouts (eg natural disasters) – times when residents are in most need of emergency supplies, make-safe equipment, generators, tarps rope and more.
“Even if we’re open for reduced hours during overcast weather, we hope this will be a valuable service for refuge for locals.
“Plus, we’re exploring opportunities to feed surplus energy into the grid during evening peak periods, with the potential benefits of increasing overall renewable engird usage while also helping to reduce peak electricity costs for all consumers.”
Mitre 10 made use of the Federal Government’s ‘Cheaper Home Batteries Program’ and would like to thank local contractor Dan Blayney (No Shorts Electrical) for the friendly knowledge and service throughout the planning and installation.
“We encourage other businesses (particularly those with daylight operating hours) to speak with a local electrician and consider whether solar or battery storage provides a good option for your situation,” Mark said.
