IF you see something flying high at Tamborine Mountain Sports Ground there is every chance it’s a hammer throw launched by Mitchell Conway.
The teenage athlete has recently added a National Hammer Throw bronze medal to the Qld medal he won in November last year.
Mitchell clinched third place in the U17 Boys Hammer at the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships contested last month in Brisbane.
Representing Tamborine Mountain State High School, Mitchell delivered an impressive 48.54m throw, a season best, to secure a place on the podium in a fiercely competitive competition.
The championships pitted Mitchell against Australia’s top young athletes, including his Queensland teammate and training partner, Connor Hopgood, who claimed gold with a spectacular 67.23m throw, a season-best performance.
Silver went to Tasmania’s Xavier Leauma, with an excellent 64.35m throw, while Mitchell’s consistent performance placed him ahead of competitors from North Qld, NSW, and South Australia.
Tamborine Mountain LA Manager, Hope Kerslake, said Mitchell’s path to the national stage was paved by his success at the Qld All Schools Athletics Championships in November, where he threw 47.19m, earning him bronze and a spot at the prestigious national competition.
“As a dedicated member of Tamborine Mountain Little Athletics, he has grown into a standout athlete, inspiring younger athletes through his hard work and perseverance,” she said.,
“It’s fantastic to see Mitchell excel on such a big stage. He’s an inspiration to all our athletes and proof that dedication and passion lead to incredible results.
“Competing against some of Australia’s best young athletes, Mitchell’s standout performance highlights the incredible depth of athletic talent within our community.
“His perseverance and determination have set him up for an exciting future, especially with Brisbane 2032 on the horizon.”
The Australian All Schools Athletics Championships is a premier event for budding athletes, providing a platform for them to compete against the nation’s best.
