AS WINTER sports head into a summer hibernation, cricket takes centre crease across Tamborine Mountain and Canungra.
Tamborine Mountain Canungra Bushrats Cricket Club President Cole Fletcher said the club has seen a strong start to the 2025/26 season across juniors, seniors, and social grades.
“We’ve been lucky enough to get juniors back this year after not having them last season,” Mr Fletcher said.
“We’ve got an under-12s team and an open juniors team, and both started on the first weekend of October.”
He said the Woolworths Blasters program, designed for younger children learning the game, has also seen a noticeable jump in numbers.
“It’s had a pretty big increase this time around and the program’s been extended across the season,” he said.
The club’s women’s Division 2 side is also back for another year after a successful season in 2024/25.
“They had a bye the first round and their first game is next weekend,” Mr Fletcher said.
“They’ve got a couple of new faces this year, so we’ll see how they go.”
Two senior men’s teams – third grade and fifth grade – are playing in the Gold Coast competition, along with two over-40s sides.
“Fifth grade had a very big win in their first game. Thirds have had one win and one loss so far,” Mr Fletcher said.
Home games are played at Long Road on Tamborine Mountain and at Moriarty Park in Canungra, with locals encouraged to come along and support.
“There’s always people around on Tuesdays for training from 4:30pm, so if anyone is interested in signing up, just come down and have a chat,” Mr Fletcher said.
