On Christmas Day 2023, at approximately 8pm, a tornado ripped through Tamborine and surrounding areas, devastating the community and its residents. The rebuild and recovery is continuing and looks to continue for some time.
As part of the recovery, Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) has awarded funding to Leadership Under the Stars Inc, a not-for-profit community group, through their Reconnection for Resilience Community Grants Program, to host a celebration of community spirit.
Leadership Under the Stars Inc. staff and volunteers were in one of the worst hit areas of the tornado. “The homes of our staff were nearly destroyed. The debris has devastated properties including our office, and we are still rebuilding, 6 months later. The emotional and mental impact has been huge,” said Michelle Nichols, Leaderships Treasurer. Some residents went over 14 days without power and had to travel hours to find a generator so that they could have water and septic facilities.
“The community has banded together to help one another. They have gone above and beyond in some instances and we would like to recognise this spirit of recovery by hosting a celebration for everyone to come and enjoy,” said Mrs Nichols.
The event will take place at Tamborine Memorial Hall on Saturday 27th July from 2pm to 4pm. The event will recognise contributions to the recovery by local residents and businesses and will be a celebration of community spirit.
