The Tamborine Mountain Bushrats have won back the Steve Hargreaves Cup with a 20–6 victory over the Beaudesert Kingfishers on Saturday, June 14, in what was the latest chapter of the Scenic Rim Showdown.
The annual match, named in honour of Bushrats legend Steve Hargreaves, signals the return of footy to the mountain each year.
Under the unique tradition, if the Bushrats lose, they must face the same opponent the following year to try and reclaim the trophy.
If they win, they retain the Cup and select a new challenger for the next season.
Last year, the Bushrats fell short against Beaudesert, setting up this year’s rematch.
With pride and silverware on the line, the home side delivered a dominant performance to reclaim the Cup.
“I think it’s the first time we’ve beaten Beauy in a regular home and away season,” said Bushrats coach Sam Sawden.
“To beat them when competition points are on the line and take back the trophy, it’s pretty special for the boys.”
Rex Brown crossed twice, while Damien Ellis and Jamie Hore also scored tries.
Trent Campbell converted two of four attempts to round out the scoring.
The result continues the Bushrats’ strong run of form, now sitting fourth on the ladder after three straight wins.
“We had a tough first loss, then a draw, but the boys have really built nicely from there,” Mr Sawden said.
“The culture’s building and so is the confidence.”
Mr Sawden credited several standout performances, including the Brimlow brothers and fullback Kyle McLeish, who Mr Sawden described as having a “standout season.”
“Cam Torrens has also been great up front, his old man played for the original Bushrats back in the ‘90s,” he said
The Bushrats face fifth-placed Currumbin Eagles this weekend.
Mr Sawden said the club is still welcoming players before the June 30 cut-off.
“Any local lads keen to have a run, we’d love to have you,” he said.
