TEN young cricketers from the Tamborine Mountain–Canungra Bushrats Blasters program will step onto one of Australia’s most iconic sporting grounds next month, after the club was selected to take part in a junior exhibition match during the lunch break of Day Two of the Ashes Test at the Gabba on December 5.
The opportunity comes as the club’s junior numbers surge, with the Blasters program growing from 10 participants last season to 30 this year.
Program coordinator David Andrews said the rapid increase followed a partnership with Queensland Cricket, which delivered “pop-up” Blasters sessions at local schools to boost awareness.
“Queensland Cricket were over the moon, particularly our Gold Coast contact who has been really supportive,” Mr Andrews said.
“Thanks to that big growth, we got the invite to be involved in the Gabba Test match.”
The Blasters program introduces children, generally under the age of 10, to cricket through simple skills, modified games and fun Friday afternoon sessions.
Mr Andrews said many families were unaware cricket was played on the mountain, and the club is focused on making the sport accessible and enjoyable.
“I’m a cricket tragic and I just love seeing people playing cricket and having fun,” he said.
“Bowling is completely unnatural at first. Watching the kids figure it out, watching them overcome being scared of the ball, their skills developing so quickly – it’s great to see.”
He said the Gabba appearance will be “absolutely massive” for the children.
“It’s the pinnacle of the sport,” Mr Andrews said.
“To play on the Gabba during an Ashes Test, is incredible.”
The Bushrats welcome new Blasters participants at Chris Willis Oval, 400 Long Road, from 4pm Fridays.
Registration is $41 for the full pre- and post-Christmas seasons and includes a Cricket Australia kit.
