IN 1988 the fledgling Tamborine Mountain Bridge Club was formed.
Many venues provided a temporary base for the playing of bridge over the next 27 years.
Members pitched in bringing refreshments to each session, as well as helping to assemble the tables and chairs for the two sessions of play each week.
The dream was always to have a purpose-built building.
The establishment of TMSA provided the impetus for the dream to become a reality but that too required many hurdles to be overcome.
Originally, the establishment of a Bridge Club was inconsistent with the TMSA Masterplan but after input from Scenic Rim Regional Council a site was identified, and plans got underway.
The next significant year in the history of the Club was 2015.
Thanks to a Gambling Community Benefit Fund grant as well as donations, Club funds, and a Bridge Federation Loan, construction began on the Club’s new permanent home.
Many hours of voluntary labour from members, supported by tradesman witnessed the completion of a fully furnished and equipped facility.
The estimated cost at the time of the building was $150,000.
The Club paid the loan off in two years which shows what can be achieved by a determined membership of a small club.
This building opened in November 2015 and now provides a home for playing bridge and also a community resource and it is used by other local organisations.
Many people would ask why play bridge?
It is a fabulous card game that requires thinking, problem solving and never-ending learning.
There is a challenge in every hand, but the enjoyment is not just in the cards but also in the camaraderie and support provided by the established players and the club in general.
Social activities provide enjoyment for members away from the bridge table.
Bridge is played at Tamborine Mountain Bridge Club four days each week.
Each session lasts three hours and costs $5 including refreshments.
