
ZAMIA Theatre was buzzing with activity with people signing up for activities and classes with U3A Tamborine Mountain.
A global phenomenon, University of the Third age (U3A) aims to keep retirement age people active through physical, mental and spiritual activities run by local volunteers.
Treasurer Nigel Waistell said 15 new members signed up on the day, with interest in a diverse range courses including Armchair Travels, Talk on Herbs, Music in Russia and Scandininavia, Archaeology, Freedom in Choice (Berlin) French, Table Tennis, Pickle Ball, Line Dancing, Tai Chi, Mahjong, Bolivia, German, Paint and Sip and Spanish.
Barry Chick’s We Are Not Alone group delves beyond the obvious to view life from a different perspective.
“We look outside the box, to help broaden our outlook, and to open our minds to the bigger picture,” said Barry.
Discussion includes life after death and indigenous culture.
Barry said the group has been running for about 18 months and it gave member the opportunity to speak about things that interest them but my not be widely debated in public.
“It has gradually grown and we usually get about a dozen people who come along – we had 17 people at the last one,” said Barry.
Vesna McCathie runs the popular line dancing group at Zamia Theatre.
It is an inclusive group welcoming men and women who enjoy music and dance – they have also held some public performances at local events.
Line dancing is so popular that Vesna has put on two classes per week.
For those interested in more classical dance, Gretel Butler runs ballet for seniors, and is also offering a six-week ballet presentation The Best of the Best – a series of ballet movies, showcasing the most iconic performances of all time.
There is so much available through U3A which, for the annual membership fee of $25 and a small fee for classes is great value.
